What Is the Difference Between a Boiler Service and Repair?

Many homeowners in Wimbledon and across South West London use the terms "boiler service" and "boiler repair" interchangeably, but they are two very different jobs with different purposes, different processes, and different costs. Knowing the distinction helps you budget correctly and avoid confusion when booking an engineer.

In simple terms, a service is planned maintenance carried out on a working boiler to keep it safe and efficient, while a repair is reactive work carried out because something has gone wrong. Both are important, but they are not substitutes for one another, and a service will not necessarily reveal or fix an existing fault, though it may identify early warning signs.

What a Boiler Service Involves

A boiler service is a set of checks carried out annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It typically includes inspecting the burner, checking the flue and ventilation, examining the heat exchanger, testing safety devices, checking gas pressure, and confirming the appliance is operating within the manufacturer's tolerances.

The aim is prevention: catching small issues, such as a slightly worn seal or a build-up of debris, before they become expensive breakdowns. A service does not typically include dismantling major components or replacing parts unless something unsafe is found during the checks.

What a Boiler Repair Involves

A repair is carried out when a boiler has already developed a fault, such as losing pressure, failing to ignite, banging noises, or displaying an error code. The engineer will diagnose the cause, which might be a faulty pump, a failed printed circuit board, a broken diverter valve, or a blocked condensate pipe, and then replace or fix the affected part.

Repairs are charged on a time and materials basis rather than as a fixed-price package, because the scope of the work is not known in advance. Materials fitted during a repair carry a 20% mark-up, and this is explained before work begins wherever possible.

Typical Costs Excluding VAT

A standard boiler service or Gas Safety Certificate costs £99 + VAT during weekday hours, covering up to two appliances, with an additional £40 + VAT for each extra appliance. A combined service and certificate is £160 + VAT on weekdays.

Repairs are charged at our standard hourly rates: £99 + VAT per hour on weekdays (7:30am–5:00pm), £120 + VAT per hour in the evening (5–9pm), and £185 + VAT per hour overnight or on Sundays and bank holidays. There is a one-hour minimum charge, then billing continues in 30-minute increments, and there is no separate call-out fee.

Can a Service Prevent the Need for a Repair?

A regular annual service significantly reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns because it catches wear and tear early. However, it cannot guarantee a boiler will never fail, particularly with older appliances or units that have not been serviced consistently in previous years.

If your boiler is more than eight to ten years old and requiring frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective in the long run to discuss replacement options with your engineer rather than continuing to fund reactive repairs.

Booking the Right Job for Your Needs

If your boiler is working normally and it has been close to a year since the last check, book a service. If it is showing a fault code, losing pressure, or making unusual noises, you need a repair visit, not a service. Being clear about which you need when you contact us helps us allocate the right amount of time and the right engineer.

We cover Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Merton, Wandsworth and the surrounding Surrey border, and same-day appointments may be available for urgent repair issues, although this cannot be guaranteed.
