Why Do My Radiators Need Bleeding?
Bleeding radiators is one of those small maintenance tasks that most households do occasionally without fully understanding why it works, or what it means if it needs doing too often. At its core, bleeding simply releases trapped air from inside a radiator, allowing hot water to fill the space fully and heat the whole radiator evenly.
For most homes, bleeding radiators once a year, typically at the start of the heating season, is perfectly normal and keeps everything running efficiently. But if you find yourself bleeding the same radiators every few weeks, that frequency itself is telling you something worth investigating rather than simply being part of routine upkeep.
This article explains why air gets into radiators in the first place, how to bleed them properly, and what it means if the problem keeps coming back.
Why radiators develop air pockets
Air enters a sealed central heating system in several ways. Some is introduced naturally through the normal expansion and contraction of water as the system heats and cools each day. More air can be drawn in through small leaks at joints, valves, or pump seals, even where there is no visible dripping. Because air is less dense than water, it rises within each radiator and collects at the highest point, usually near the bleed valve.
How to tell a radiator needs bleeding
The classic sign is a radiator that is warm at the bottom but noticeably cooler at the top, sometimes accompanied by a gurgling sound as water moves past the trapped air. Radiators can also take longer than normal to heat up, or the whole room may feel less warm than it used to despite the thermostat being set the same as always.
The correct way to bleed a radiator
With the heating switched off, use a radiator key to slowly turn the bleed valve, usually found at the top corner of the radiator, until you hear air hissing out. Have a cloth ready, as a small amount of water will follow once the air has cleared, then close the valve firmly to stop the flow. It is good practice to start with the radiators on the ground floor and work upward, since air tends to migrate towards higher points in the system over time.
Checking your boiler pressure afterwards
Bleeding radiators releases a small amount of water along with the air, which can cause the boiler's pressure gauge to drop slightly. Once you have finished bleeding all the radiators that need it, check the pressure and top up using the filling loop if it has fallen below the normal range, typically around 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is off.
When frequent bleeding indicates a bigger problem
If the same radiators need bleeding every few weeks, rather than once a year, this suggests air is continually entering the system, which is not normal. Common causes include a slow leak somewhere in the pipework, a faulty automatic air vent on the boiler, or a failing pump seal. These issues will not resolve themselves through repeated bleeding and are worth having properly diagnosed.

If bleeding has become a regular chore rather than an annual task, or if you notice other symptoms such as pressure that keeps dropping or damp patches near pipework, it is time to book a proper inspection.
