Why Is My Radiator Cold at the Top?
If you place a hand on a radiator and find the bottom warm but the top stubbornly cold, the most likely explanation is trapped air. Air rises within the radiator and collects at the highest point, forming a pocket that stops hot water reaching that part of the radiator and preventing it from heating up evenly.
This is one of the easiest heating problems to fix and does not usually require a call-out, though there are situations where the underlying cause is something other than simple air, particularly if the problem returns quickly or affects multiple radiators repeatedly.

How to bleed a radiator
Bleeding a radiator is a simple, safe task for most households. With the heating switched off and radiators cooled slightly, use a radiator key to slowly open the bleed valve, usually located at the top corner, until you hear a hissing sound as air escapes. Keep a cloth handy to catch the small amount of water that follows once the air has cleared, then close the valve firmly. Afterwards, check the boiler pressure gauge and top up with the filling loop if it has dropped below the normal range.
When bleeding does not solve the problem
If a radiator remains cold at the top even after bleeding, or the same radiator needs bleeding again within a few weeks, this points to a different cause. A persistent air problem can indicate a slow leak somewhere in the system that is continually introducing air, or an issue with the automatic air vent on the boiler itself failing to release air properly.
Balancing issues and flow problems
In some systems, particularly larger or older ones, the flow of water is not evenly balanced across all radiators. A radiator furthest from the boiler may receive less flow than others, which can present as a persistently cool top corner even without air being the direct cause. Rebalancing a system is a job for a qualified heating engineer, who will adjust lockshield valves across the property to even out flow.
Checking for wider system faults
If multiple radiators across the house are affected, it is worth having the whole system checked rather than bleeding each one repeatedly. This could reveal a failing pump, a faulty automatic air vent, or sludge affecting circulation more broadly. A boiler service is a good opportunity for an engineer to inspect these components as part of a routine check.

Bleeding a radiator does not involve the gas or electrical components of a boiler and is safe for most people to do themselves with basic care. However, any work on the boiler itself, including the automatic air vent, pump, or other internal components, should only be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, since these form part of the boiler's gas and heating system.
