How Are Hourly Plumbing Charges Calculated?
Understanding exactly how hourly plumbing charges work helps you avoid any surprises when the invoice arrives. Rather than a flat rate regardless of timing, our charges are structured around when the work takes place, with clear minimums and increments that apply consistently across all jobs.
This guide breaks down the rate structure in full, along with the factors that influence how long a job takes and therefore what the final cost will be.
The Three Time Bands
Our hourly rate depends on when the work is carried out. Weekday work between 7:30am and 5:00pm is charged at £99 + VAT per hour. Evening work between 5pm and 9pm is charged at £120 + VAT per hour. Overnight work, along with all work on Sundays and bank holidays, is charged at £185 + VAT per hour.
These bands reflect the practical realities of staffing engineers outside standard working hours, and they apply consistently regardless of the type of plumbing or heating job involved.
The One-Hour Minimum
All jobs are subject to a one-hour minimum charge, even if the actual work takes less time. This reflects the travel, setup and administrative time involved in any visit, and is standard practice across the industry.
30-Minute Increments After the First Hour
Once the first hour is complete, charges continue in 30-minute increments rather than being rounded up to the next full hour. This means a job taking one hour and twenty minutes is charged for one and a half hours, not two.
No Separate Call-Out Charge
Unlike some providers, we do not add a separate call-out fee on top of the hourly rate. The hourly rate is the full labour cost of the visit from the point the engineer begins work, which keeps pricing straightforward and easier to estimate in advance.
What Affects How Long a Job Takes
Access, the age and condition of existing pipework or the boiler, the availability of the correct materials, and whether the fault is straightforward to diagnose all affect how long a job takes. This is why we aim, wherever reasonably possible, for work to exceed two hours quoted, allowing for a realistic buffer rather than an unrealistically optimistic estimate.
Materials on Top of Labour
Where materials are needed, these are charged separately with a 20% mark-up on the trade cost, and material collection time is chargeable at the applicable hourly rate, capped at one hour per trade. These costs are additional to the hourly labour charge described above.
Fixed Quotations as an Alternative
For larger or more clearly defined jobs, a fixed quotation may be more appropriate than hourly billing, giving you cost certainty from the outset. This is discussed in more detail in our separate guide on when a fixed quotation makes sense.
