Why Do Plumbers Add a Mark-Up to Materials?
It is a fair question, and one we are happy to answer directly: when we supply materials for a job, we apply a 20% mark-up on top of the trade cost. Understanding what this actually covers, rather than assuming it is simply an added charge, helps put the pricing into context.
This guide explains what goes into sourcing materials for a job, how collection time is handled, and why this approach ultimately benefits the reliability of the work carried out.
What the Mark-Up Actually Covers
The mark-up reflects the time and expertise involved in selecting the correct part for your specific system, sourcing it from a trade supplier, and standing behind it with a warranty. It is not simply an arbitrary addition, but a standard and transparent industry practice used across plumbing and heating trades.
Material Collection Time
In addition to the mark-up on the part itself, time spent collecting materials from a supplier is chargeable at the applicable hourly rate, capped at one hour per trade. This reflects the genuine time an engineer spends travelling to and from a merchant, particularly for parts that cannot be carried as standard stock on the van.
This cap exists specifically so that customers are not charged excessively for collection time on jobs that happen to require multiple trips.
Guaranteed Suitability and Warranty
When we supply a part, we select it based on knowledge of your system, ensuring correct specification, pressure rating and compatibility. This allows us to offer a workmanship and product warranty on the finished job. Customer-supplied materials, by contrast, are not covered by our workmanship or product warranty, since we have no control over their quality or suitability before they arrive on site.
How This Compares Across the Industry
A materials mark-up is standard practice across the plumbing and heating trade, and most reputable firms operate on a similar basis. Being upfront about the percentage, as we are, allows customers to understand the pricing structure clearly rather than finding an unexplained cost on an invoice.
Keeping Costs Transparent
Wherever practical, we aim to explain likely material costs before work begins, particularly for jobs where the parts required are known in advance, such as replacing a specific valve or fitting. For more complex jobs where the exact parts needed only become clear once work starts, costs will be confirmed as soon as possible during the visit.
