Radiator Repairs and Replacements in Wimbledon

A radiator that stays cold, leaks from a valve, or takes an age to heat up is often a sign of an issue within that individual radiator, though it can occasionally point to something wider in the central heating system. We arrange radiator repair and replacement appointments across Wimbledon and the surrounding areas.

From bleeding and balancing to replacing a leaking valve or fitting a new radiator altogether, the engineer will assess what is going on with your particular radiator, or radiators, before agreeing the best way forward.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Cold patches, particularly towards the top or bottom of a radiator
  • A radiator that stays completely cold despite the heating being on
  • Leaking from a valve, joint or the radiator body itself
  • Banging, gurgling or ticking noises from the radiator
  • A radiator that takes much longer to heat up than others
  • Rust-coloured water when bleeding a radiator
  • Visible corrosion or damp patches on the wall behind a radiator
  • One or more rooms noticeably colder than the rest of the property

Likely causes

  • Trapped air within the radiator, causing cold spots at the top
  • Sludge or debris settling at the bottom of the radiator over time
  • A faulty or seized thermostatic radiator valve (TRV)
  • A worn valve spindle or gland causing a leak
  • Corrosion within an older radiator, particularly steel panel types
  • An imbalanced heating system affecting flow to certain radiators
  • A pinhole leak from internal corrosion
  • Loose or worn pipe connections at the radiator valve

What the engineer may inspect

  • Whether the radiator needs bleeding to release trapped air
  • The condition and operation of the radiator valves
  • Signs of leaking at valves, joints or the radiator body
  • Whether sludge is present, indicating wider system contamination
  • Water flow and balance compared with other radiators
  • The condition of pipework connecting the radiator
  • Whether the radiator itself is a good candidate for repair or replacement
  • General condition of the heating system feeding the radiator

Simple fixes versus wider issues

Cold spots are often resolved simply by bleeding the radiator, while a leaking valve is usually a straightforward valve replacement. Where several radiators are affected, or there is visible sludge, this can point to a wider issue within the central heating system that may benefit from further investigation, and this can be discussed as part of a central heating repair.

Replacing a radiator

Where a radiator is corroded, leaking from the body itself, or simply undersized for the room, replacement is often the more sensible route. We can supply and fit a suitable replacement radiator, with materials supplied carrying a 20% mark-up on cost, or fit one you have sourced yourself, noting that customer-supplied units are not covered by our workmanship or product warranty.

When sludge or debris is the underlying issue

If cold radiators and discoloured bleed water suggest a build-up of sludge across the system, a heating system clean such as a power flush or MagnaCleanse may be recommended alongside individual radiator repairs to address the root cause.
